Music ran through Onika’s blood from a tender age. Born in Jamaica, her early introduction to live performance was in her home village Resource, and ever since then, her soulful voice and reggae style has been capturing the hearts of audiences on two continents.
Having first recorded music in Kingston, Onika moved to London to work on the Remix by Seanie B from BBC 1EXTRA featuring her, Tubby T and Miss Dynamite and a song with Nathan & Lady Posh – The Way You Wine.
In the band Slyde, her unique voice was used to great effect on their breakbeat, techno and house singles, including ‘Kiss Kiss Bang Bang’ and ‘Vibrate to This”, released on the Finger Licking Label. In 2006 they were nominated for Best New Act at the Breakbeat Awards.
Now in Bristol, Onika performs with her band ‘Onika Venus’, (band members including Mark Venus, Tom Selway and Dan Boulter).
Her original material, range of styles, including old school reggae and soulful compositions, conjures up many surprises.
No lesser lights than Sian Evans of Kosheen, Jason Flinter (Songdiner) and guitar magician Gerry Leonard (Bowie, Vega, Spooky Ghost) chose ‘Everything You Are’ as Songsmith’s Song of the Year 2020, as well as being one of Ujima’s top 3 tracks of the year.
The album is available on CD at onikavenus.com, or Bandcamp.
